Action points are needed to carry out several important activities in Die2Nite.

You have a maximum of 6. Given that most food and drink replenish 6 AP, the usual practice is therefore to use up 6 AP --> (at 0) eat food --> use up 6 AP --> (at 0) drink water --> use up 6 AP --> alcohol and or drugs. Most people just eat and drink for the day, and when water levels are low, some may drink every other day.

Restoring AP

AP can be restored by eating Food, drinking Water, drinking Alcohol, or taking Drugs, generally in this order. Aside from Drugs, the other three can only restore AP once a day. (And in the case of Alcohol, once every other day.)

Eating food may cause thirst later on, so it is generally recommended to eat (then use the AP up) before drinking.

Uses for AP

  • Upgrading your home to a tent uses up 2 AP. This adds to the town's defense at no resource cost, and is performed by most villagers on day one. Upgrading further to hovel in the first few days is generally frowned upon by villagers.
  • Players may contribute to construction by investing AP into projects to be built. Keep an eye on the forums to understand what your village needs built. High-priority buildings are usually the Workshop and Watchtower.
  • Moving around in The World Beyond takes 1 AP per step.
  • It takes 1 AP to open or close the town gates. It's pretty important to close them at the end of the day (before 11pm game time) to give the zombies some pause.
  • It costs 1 AP to use a Repair Kit.
  • Clearing debris from an area to uncover a structure takes 1 AP per attempt. (~10 attempts may be needed, which will be displayed in a bar in the sector.) -- use Ness-Quick Weedkiller if possible!
  • Fighting zombies barehanded requires 1 AP per attempt. This is NOT a recommended action when cornered, and has only a 10% chance of working out. If you're stuck, try asking on the forums for more people to arrive and control the area instead.
  • Dragging the corpse of a player who died in town out of the town requires 2 AP.
  • The Workshop allows material transformation for 3 AP per transformation. (Can be reduced through Upgrades)

Free actions not requiring AP

  • Getting your daily Water Ration from the town's Well.
  • Estimating the night's zombie attack at the Watchtower.
  • Eating/drinking (including alcohol)/taking drugs.
  • Combining items (e.g. Can+Screwdriver=Open Can)
  • Tidying your house and cleaning your clothes.
  • Using most weapons.
  • Searching an area for items.
