Hardcore mode was added 1 of december 2011. After the update, after you have over 100 [[Soul Points]], you can choose to join a random town, or to join a hardcore town. Hardcore towns are much harder to survive in.  Note that there is only ever 1 Hardcore town open for joining at a time, the next appears as the previous is filled.

Town Setup

-The amount of prebuilt constructions were decreased significally.

-Initial water reserves are decreased.

Game mechanic changes

-Camping survival chances are significantly lowered.

-Chance to die from infection at 23:00 increased to 75%.

-Chances to injure someone with the 'assault' option increased.

-The amount of free hero days you get if you are the last man standing is doubled. Note that there is a seperate Hardcore - LMS rare achievement which is gained as well as a regular LMS.

-External apps are limited in functionality due to the XML feeds being truncated in Hardcore towns. All auto-updaters are disabled or will not work correctly. Some apps may still allow manual zone updates (DtD)
