Your soul is the only thing that will survive zombies. If you are eaten alive, you will re-live in another town, to try again..

There are two types of souls, a weak spirit and a heroic spirit. If you have Hero mode enabled and bought, the Hero Spirit will show you are indeed a hero. While the weak spirit is just the default that every citizen starts with. You can get a heroic spirit also by getting 'the last man standing' distinction.
