The smell of the food will distract the zombies from your tasty, tasty flesh.....hopefully. at the very least, a rotten tomato might make it slip. Every bit of food will add defence to the town. A bad choice if greifers are in the town, as they will take the chance to dump every one of the towns food supplies in the dump.
