Action points are needed to carry out several important activities in Die2Nite.
+
Action Points (represented as AP) represent your energy in Die2Nite. Most actions you take require at least 1 AP.

You have a maximum of 6. Given that most food and drink replenish 6 AP, the usual practice is therefore to use up 6 AP --> (at 0) eat food --> use up 6 AP --> (at 0) drink water --> use up 6 AP --> alcohol and or drugs. Most people just eat and drink for the day, and when water levels are low, some may drink every other day.
+
You have a normal maximum of 6. Being Wounded will reduce your maximum AP to 5, in addition to other hindrances. If you reach 0 AP, you'll be Exhausted and unable to complete most actions (including some that don't require AP, such as attacking with a weapon in the World Beyond).

 +
Each night (if you survive the Attack, of course), you will be restored to your maximum AP. There are also numerous methods to gain AP beyond this.

Restoring AP
+
Food
 +
You can eat a single piece of Food each day. Doing so will give you the Fed status.
 +
* Eating basic food restores your AP to the maximum.
 +
* Eating premium food restores your AP to the maximum, plus one. This is 7 AP for a healthy individual, or 6AP if they are Wounded.
 +

 +
Water
 +
Unless you are Dehydrated, drinking from a water source restores your AP to the maximum and gives you the Refreshed status. Even when Refreshed, you can still drink again if you are Thirsty or Dehydrated, which will improve your status ( Dehydrated to Thirsty or Thirsty to normal) , but it will not yield any extra AP either.

AP can be restored by eating Food, drinking Water, drinking Alcohol, or taking Drugs, generally in this order. Aside from Drugs, the other three can only restore AP once a day. (And in the case of Alcohol, once every other day.)
+
Alcohol
 +
Drinking alcohol restores your AP to the maximum and gives you the Drunk status, preventing you from drinking any more alcohol that day. This will be replaced by the Hungover status the following day, preventing you from drinking that day, too.

Eating food may cause thirst later on, so it is generally recommended to eat (then use the AP up) before drinking.
+
Drugs
 +
Some Drugs can restore AP. Using any drug will give you the Drugged status. This does not prevent you from using additional drugs, but doing so will give you the Hooked! status.
 +
* Taking Anabolic Steroids restores your AP to the maximum.
 +
* Taking Twinoid 500mg restores your AP to the maximum, plus 2. This is 8 AP for a healthy individual.
 +
* Taking Unlabelled Drug or Betapropine 5mg (expired) has a chance of either restoring your maximum AP, or your maximum AP plus 1.

 +
Other Sources
 +
The following methods can be attempted once per day:
 +
* Rolling Dice has a chance of restoring 1 AP.
 +
* Playing with the Incomplete Deck of Cards has a chance of restoring 1 AP.
 +
* Heroes can build Siesta Time in their house. Having a nap using this will have a chance of restoring 2 AP.
 +
These methods are limited by your available resources:
 +
* Using the EMS System will injure you and restore up to 5 AP (not 6, due to the injury). It cannot be used while injured.
 +
* Drinking Bloody hot coffee restores up to 4 AP.
 +
* A Ghoul may restore AP by consuming a Citizen.

Any action that uses AP will indicate its cost beforehand.
 +
* Upgrading your home. The initial cost (to build a Tent) is 2 AP.
 +
* Construction. Each player can contribute as much AP as desired to the construction of buildings.
 +
* Moving around in The World Beyond. It costs 1 AP to move from zone to zone.
 +
* Opening and closing the town gates. It costs 1 AP to open or close them.
 +
* Using a Repair Kit or Kwik-Fix. This costs 1 AP.
 +
* Attempting to open a Safe or Sealed Architect's Chest. Costs 1 AP per try.
 +
* Clearing debris from a buried building. It costs 1 AP to clear one piece of debris from the building.
 +
* Fighting zombies barehanded in the World Beyond. It costs 1 AP per attempt.
 +
* Dragging the corpse of a dead citizen out of town. This costs 2 AP.
 +
* Converting materials in the Workshop. This costs 3 AP normally, 2 AP with either the Factory or the Hacksaw, and 1 AP with both the Factory and Hacksaw.
 +
* Attacking other citizens, in 100+ SP towns. This costs 5 AP.
 +
* Using the Primitive_Catapult uses 4 AP. Building the Calibrated Catapult reduces the cost to 2 AP.
 +
* Improving your home as a Hero. Costs vary depending on the improvement and its level.
 +
* Improving a campsite in the World Beyond costs 1 AP.
 +
* Searching the refuse (for Shunned , or anybody if the Town is in Chaos Mode). This costs 1 AP each time.
 +
* Entering a Explorable Ruins, this costs 1 AP.

* Upgrading your home to a tent uses up 2 AP. This adds to the town's defense at no resource cost, and is performed by most villagers on day one. Upgrading further to hovel in the first few days is generally frowned upon by villagers.
+
Free Actions
* Players may contribute to construction by investing AP into projects to be built. Keep an eye on the forums to understand what your village needs built. High-priority buildings are usually the Workshop and Watchtower.
+
None of these actions require AP to accomplish.
* Moving around in The World Beyond takes 1 AP per step.
+
* Collecting your daily Water Ration from the town's Well. If you are able to take an extra ration, this also will not require AP to do so.
* It takes 1 AP to open or close the town gates. It's pretty important to close them at the end of the day (before 11pm game time) to give the zombies some pause.

* It costs 1 AP to use a Repair Kit.

* Clearing debris from an area to uncover a structure takes 1 AP per attempt. (~10 attempts may be needed, which will be displayed in a bar in the sector.) -- use Ness-Quick Weedkiller if possible!

* Fighting zombies barehanded requires 1 AP per attempt. This is NOT a recommended action when cornered, and has only a 10% chance of working out. If you're stuck, try asking on the forums for more people to arrive and control the area instead.

* Dragging the corpse of a player who died in town out of the town requires 2 AP.

* The Workshop allows material transformation for 3 AP per transformation. (Can be reduced through Upgrades)

Action Points (represented as Small pa.gif) represent your energy in Die2Nite. Most actions you take require at least 1 Small pa.gif.

You have a normal maximum of 6. Being Status wound.gifStatus wound.gifWounded Wounded will reduce your maximum Small pa.gif to 5, in addition to other hindrances. If you reach 0 Small pa.gif, you'll be Status tired.gifStatus tired.gifExhausted Exhausted and unable to complete most actions (including some that don't require Small pa.gif, such as attacking with a weapon in the World Beyond).

Restoring AP

Each night (if you survive the Attack, of course), you will be restored to your maximum Small pa.gif. There are also numerous methods to gain Small pa.gif beyond this.

Food

You can eat a single piece of Food each day. Doing so will give you the Status hasEaten.gifStatus hasEaten.gifFed Fed status.

 • Eating basic food restores your Small pa.gif to the maximum.
 • Eating premium food restores your Small pa.gif to the maximum, plus one. This is 7 Small pa.gif for a healthy individual, or 6Small pa.gif if they are Status wound.gifStatus wound.gifWounded Wounded.

Water

Unless you are Status dehyd.gifStatus dehyd.gifDehydrated Dehydrated!, drinking from a water source restores your Small pa.gif to the maximum and gives you the Status hasDrunk.gifStatus hasDrunk.gifRefreshed Refreshed status. Even when Status hasDrunk.gifStatus hasDrunk.gifRefreshed Refreshed, you can still drink again if you are Status thirst.gifStatus thirst.gifThirsty Thirsty or Status dehyd.gifStatus dehyd.gifDehydrated Dehydrated!, which will improve your status ( Status dehyd.gifStatus dehyd.gifDehydrated Dehydrated! to Status thirst.gifStatus thirst.gifThirsty Thirsty or Status thirst.gifStatus thirst.gifThirsty Thirsty to normal) , but it will not yield any extra Small pa.gif either.

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol restores your Small pa.gif to the maximum and gives you the Status drunk.gifStatus drunk.gifDrunk Drunk status, preventing you from drinking any more alcohol that day. This will be replaced by the Status hung over.gifStatus hung over.gifHungover Hungover status the following day, preventing you from drinking that day, too.

Drugs

Some Drugs can restore Small pa.gif. Using any drug will give you the Status drugged.gifStatus drugged.gifDrugged Drugged status. This does not prevent you from using additional drugs, but doing so will give you the Status addict.gifStatus addict.gifHooked! Hooked! status.

Other Sources

The following methods can be attempted once per day:

These methods are limited by your available resources:

Uses for AP

Any action that uses AP will indicate its cost beforehand.

Free Actions

None of these actions require Small pa.gif to accomplish.

 • Collecting your daily Water Ration from the town's Well. If you are able to take an extra ration, this also will not require Small pa.gif to do so.
 • Estimating the night's zombie attack at the Watchtower.

 • Tidying your house and cleaning your clothes.
 • Using weapons in the World Beyond.
 • Searching an area or building for items, and subsequently autosearching the zone every two hours.
 • Stealing from fellow citizens.
 • Picking up or dropping items.
 • Cooking food in a Kitchen.
 • Taking items from the Town Bank.
