I'm not sure about the advice to always drink your water ration last, after you've eaten. This might hold true in town, but if you're out exploring and have a choice, I think it might be better to use your water first. If you use your food, and then keep exploring, there's a chance you can get dehydrated, and if you do, drinking water will cure your dehydration, but will not restore your AP. You might end up stuck in the wild without the AP to return to the town.
-- True, but generally you want to eat then drink. The only way you would end up dehydrated is if you walked 22 steps without drinking (which is extremely doubtful) or if you woke up thirsty, which shouldn't happen for anyone new since (s)he would drink daily, and any veterans sticking to some water rationing plan would know about it already.
